CHARACTER NAME: Midnighter (whatever name he was born with, he doesn't know it)
CHARACTER AGE: Unknown (most likely late 20s, early 30s)
SERIES: DC Comics (New 52 flavor)
CHRONOLOGY: Midnighter 6
CLASS: Anti-Hero
HOUSING: No preference
BACKGROUND:
Midnighter’s world is much like our own, with several main differences: magic and aliens exist, and superhumans are becoming increasingly common occurrence. 5 or 6 years prior to M’s canon point, 7 mostly then unknown superheroes—Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Cyborg—united to save the Earth from an alien invasion, and formally announced to the world that superhumans not only existed, but lived among them. Since then, even more superhumans have come out of the woodwork, putting on colorful costumes and declaring themselves either heroes or villains, and mostly fighting amongst themselves.
However, what most people don’t know was that superhumans, aliens, and magic had existed for centuries before this,a s one group in particular had been around to both combat the threats and keep them a secret. This group, founded in the Middle Ages by a rag-tag group of magicians, superhumans, and other-worldly beings, was originally known as the Demon Knights, but over time came to be known by its modern name of Stormwatch.
It was quite by accident that Midnighter discovered and became associated with Stormwatch. He had been tracking down a fellow superhuman named Andrew Pulaski—better known by his adopted monicker of Apollo—in the hopes of entering into a business partnership with the man (the business of punching people in the face), only to find members of Stormwatch had found him first. While Apollo initially wasn’t interested (and Midnighter was never even invited), both men soon found themselves in the middle of Stormwatch business when the moon sent a tentacle monster down to destroy the Earth (comics!). The ensuing fight was enough to sway Apollo’s favor, but Midnighter’s wouldn’t come until he fought with a rogue member of Stormwatch. He had never come across someone whose abilities rivalled his own, and eager for a rematch, he agreed to join (they had since offered him an invitation).
Over time, Midnighter came to get behind Stormwatch and their mission of protecting the Earth from real threats (while the so-called superheroes fought what Stormwatch viewed as petty squabbles), and his loyalty was quickly put to the test when the rogue Stormwatch agent returned and, disguised, branded Midnighter a traitor. The team quickly turned against him, and he went on the run to clear his name. Thankfully, other members soon saw though the traitor’s disguise and learned the truth. Unfortunately, that was the moment their field leader decided to turn on the team after losing most of her humanity in an earlier mission. Working together, Stormwatch managed to take her down, however, due to time altering shenanigans immediately after, something was altered in the timeline (it was never fully explained why or how), the field leader was back on the team and regained her humanity.
The true reason for Midnighter staying with Stormwatch, if he’s being honest, was Apollo. Originally drawn to him as a kindred spirit, the two quickly became close. For a while, they became an on again, off again couple, with Midnighter always pulling away if he felt they got too close. Things eventually got serious for the couple, and that was when Midnighter went and screwed it all up. After admitting to Apollo that he had lied to him about his real name and his past (mainly the fact that he didn’t have either, at least that knew), the pair got into a fight. Upon calculating the odds of the success of the relationship, Midnighter chose to break the whole thing off, rather than fight for it, as he believed he would never be the one to make him happy. He broke up with Andrew and went on leave from his duties with Stormwatch to distance himself.
To keep his mind off his bitter breakup, he went home. Or rather, the closest thing a “homeless, nameless fight robot” had to a home—a floating, triangular space station called the God Garden. See, with the sudden explosion of superhumans on Earth, the idea of scientifically creating one’s own became a popular form of mad science. The Gardener, a mysterious older woman (who may or may not be a hologram of the God Garden itself), took it upon herself to rid the world of bad science, collecting and locking away the objects created, and giving refuge to the living beings affected. Midnighter was her first “child.”
While visting, the Gardener asked him to help her collect a series of artificial organs which ostensibly grant the donor superhuman abilities, but in a reality will most likely kill the donor and those around them, Midnighter found himself on a collision course with a super-secret independent spy organization known as Spyral, and with one agent in particular—Agent 37, more commonly known as Dick Grayson. Dick managed to get the upperhand in several encounters, angering Midnighter, who was not used to losing. It began to be a point of pride with him. Midnighter finally thought he got the upper hand when they tried to retrieve a bio-weapon brain with mind control abilities, when he turned Dick’s own hypnos implants against him and locking him in a cell within the God Garden. However, he soon learned the brain was still in play, and a group of terrorists planned on using it to instill hated at a concert in Tel Aviv. Midnighter begged Gardener to let him go down to stop it, but she initially refused, believing the ensuing bloodshed would be the turning point in people turning to mad science to create superhumans, the very goal she sought. Dick managed to convince Gardener to let them help, and together they saved the day (well Dick saved the day, while Midnighter contained the mind controlled crowd). Realizing the Gardener had broken his trust by refusing to help humanity for her own selfish purposes, he decided to cut ties with his adoptive mother and go back to life on his own.
Midnighter returned to the way he originally operated—saving everyday people with the help of his assets, other everyday people he had either saved or networked with in the past. He even decided to give dating another try, creating an online dating profile before starting to get serious with a man he saved while on a date with someone else (it was the first date and it didn’t work out anyway, though they remained friends and he became on eof M’s assets). Unfortunately, the Gardener brought him back into her life by revealing someone unknown broke into the God Garden and stole all of its artifacts. Midnighter had been spending his free time tracking them all down while getting serious with his relationship. **SPOILERS FOR THE LATEST ISSUE OF MIDNIGHTER** If only he hadn’t discovered the thief and his boyfriend were one and the same: Prometheus.
PERSONALITY:
While Midnighter wears something he would grudgingly concede is a costume (he much prefers the term “work clothes”), he isn’t much of a traditional superhero. In fact, if you call him a superhero to his face, he’d deny it. Instead, he considers himself a mongoose who is constantly seeking out cobras—one predator who destroys another.
His reasons for doing this are two-fold. The more prominent reason is because that’s exactly what he was programmed to do. It’s a compulsion. Thanks to the implants in his head, he can see a million different ways to kill someone, so that all he has to do is pick the best outcome. He is constantly seeing the worst in humanity, and compelled to do something about it. Failure to act results in Midnighter seeing the options over and over again, sometimes even in his dreams.
This easily could have turned him into a mindless killing machine, but it’s the second thing that keeps him from doing so. Midnighter is the creation of mad science, the result of which he lives with every day. This kind of life isn’t something he would wish upon his worst enemy, and it’s this which drives him to use his powers for good, to make a sweeping generalization. He never wants anyone to go through what he did, and so he makes sure to point himself at only those who deserve it. Those who would doom someone else to a life like his. Someone who would ruin a life for a buck. And he’ll do anything to protect everyday people from getting into those kinds of people’s cross-hairs.
All this sounds like its left Midnighter a dark and brooding mess, but that couldn’t be any farther from the truth. In reality, Midnighter’s not only quite content with who he is, he loves it. While this might seem like it clashes with the whole “wouldn’t wish his abilities on his worst enemy” thing, it’s more that he fully understands that he’s anything btu normal, and that the average person couldn’t handle such abilities. Plus, while he may be all right with who he is, the price he paid for it (his name, his family, his past, any chance at being normal) was high.
So yes, he loves who he is and what he can do. He’s happiest when he’s wrapped up in a fight, blood flying everywhere, but he’s just as happy showing anyone who is willing his life. Yes, there’s no secret identity for Midnighter. He even included his work information in his dating profile, and explain to his online date that he had nothing to hide; what people saw was what they got. And what they got was a smart mouth, that can be quick with a sarcastic remark or a flirtatious comment, who also enjoys good food and strong liquor (sadly, not that it’ll get him drunk).
What they also get is someone who doesn’t know much about themselves beyond work. Midnighter genuinely would be unable to tell you his favorite book or song, mostly because those are things he doesn’t pay much attention to. Since his break-up with Apollo, this is something he’s been trying to work on—to try to determine who Midnighter is besides “the guy who really, really loves punching aliens in the face,” but it’s very much a work in progress.
POWER:
Implants - When Midnighter was created by person or persons unknown, he was designed to be a master of combat. As a result, he has multiple implants designed to not only augment his body to superhuman levels (see enhanced skeleton/senses), but to also grant him special abilities. The ability he uses the most often would be his battle precognition, which enables him to run through every possible battle scenario in a blink of an eye, and build a plan of attack around it.
They also allow him to "sense the increased electrical activity" in the brains of others, which translates to him being able to see the special abilities, or implants, of others merely by looking at them, even if they aren't using them. He simply senses that they're there. He might not have a word to describe it but he'll have a rough idea of how they work. This is a part of his battle precognition, as it's designed to help him accurately run the statistics needed to pick the optimal strategy to fight/kill his opponent, though he doesn't have to be actively engaged in battle with the other person for them to operate.
However, the ability does not allow him to see past certain things, as he's been shown incapable of seeing Dick Grayson's face once its obscured by Grayson's Hypnos implants.
In addition to the implants in his brain, Midnighter has carbon fiber muscle implants which allow him to push his body past normal human limits—he has enhanced speed (though nothing compared to a speedster), strength (he can’t lift a car over his head, but he can tear a man apart with his bare hands), reflexes, and coordination, as well as to withstand a pain greater than the average human being.
Sense-wise, Midnighter's eyes are so precises, they can catch other people's micro-expressions, or concealed emotions that appear between 1/15th and 1/25th of a second. He can use this ability to detect whether someone is lying and help him get to the truth. He also has heightened hearing, as he's been shown hearing things before his teammates. It's probable that his other senses have been enhanced to this degree as well, however it has yet to be outright confirmed.
Limited Healing Factor - His blood has healing properties enabling him to heal at a quicker rate. This healing factor will keep him from catching a cold, but does not function that quickly in terms of physical injury. If Midnighter gets seriously injured (ex. breaks an arm, gets a hole blown into his chest), he will require medical attention and be out of commission for a few days. This healing factor also allows Midnighter to go for (at the very least) months on end without eating or using the facilities.
However, these implants can be shut down, either by psychic manipulation or nanobots. It's also been shown that his battle computer cannot compute when up aginst magic. Also, thanks to those implants it’s possible to manipulate Midnighter to do things against his will by rewiring them, again either by psychic forces or nanobots.
His apartment/doors - In the new 52, Midnighter's apartment is... unique. It's technically a living being that can be really anywhere it wants. This is because it's made from "undifferentiated urban cells," which according to Midnighter "can mimic any urban molecule." So basically Midnighter grew his apartment to hide between cities because he's a paranoid bastard. What I was wondering/hoping is that Midnighter would be able to build a new apartment from said undifferentiated urban cells (he still has some on him due to repairing his boyfriend's apartment with them just before his pull point), though this would only exist anywhere within the borders of the United States.
Additionally, through his apartment, he's rigged up a Door system. Doors (always a capital D) are yellow, rectangular gateways from one constant (in this case, Midnighter's apartment), to a secondary location of someone's choosing. Anyone with the ability to call Doors can also call the Door to their location, but the end location would always be the constant. For example, if Midnighter was looking to travel from Nonah to De Chima, he would first call "Door," summoning the Door to his location in Nonah. Travelling through it would take him to his apartment, which doesn't exist in any one city. From there, he'd call another Door, which would take him to De Chima.
I apologize if this sounds convoluted, it's convoluted in his canon and I've done my best to explain it.

[The video clicks on to show a young man in a black cowl whose mouth is speckled with blood. Sure, there appears to have been an attempt to clean it off before turning the feed on, but he's missed quite a few spots. No matter, Midnighter has more important things to attend to.]
Hate to break it to any of you who actually knew him, which from what I can gather is a grand total of 3 of you, but the last guy with my name is gone. Apparently whoever the hell it is that brings us here liked me better. Probably because it seems like that guy makes me look like Booster freaking Gold. For everyone else, name's Midnighter. I've already done my homework and gotten the basics, so no need for anyone to give me a big speech.
That said, two questions:
[He holds up a gloved hand, palm facing him, as he counts his questions off with his fingers. He does this mostly because he realizes his palm is also caked in blood from touching his wound. Unfortunately, there's still some on the back of his glove too.]
1. When you choose not to become a government puppet, how the hell are you supposed to get around to the other Porter cities? From what I can gather, the porters are a puppet-only privilege.
2. Where does a guy go to have some fun around here? I was just about to get into an... extremely messy breakup, and I could really use the stress relief.
[Does he mean punching or partying? With him, it's impossible to tell.]
I'll also accept recommendations for a good place to eat.
Oh, and anyone with business with the other guy can take it up with me. Figure it's the least I can do.
[Rubs some of the dried blood off his mouth with a fisted hand before turning off the feed.]
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
**SPOILERS FOR THE LATEST ISSUE OF MIDNIGHTER**
Midnighter wasn’t used to being seen by the general public. At least not while he was still wearing his work clothes. He much preferred to stick to the outskirts and the shadows. If you saw him, you were either in trouble, or causing it. That sort of thing. Unfortunately for M, he had to walk down a busy street in a city called Heropa, all while nursing the knife wound Matt gave him. Not exactly inconspicuous.
Was Matt even that guy’s real name? Blood dripped from between his gloved fingers onto the sidewalk, people giving him a wide berth as he passed, though some stopped to take pictures. Everything out of that man’s mouth had to have been a lie. The base he had woken up at had offered to tend to his wounds, but Midnighter refused their service. How could I fall for someone who choose to wear a codpiece over his clothes? Trusting strangers with medical care was probably how he wound up with his implants in the first place. And was his weapon of choice seriously a glowing, electric cricket bat?
He officially had the worst taste in men.
Midnighter stumbled, but managed to regain his balance before he made a total fool of himself in this strange place. Okay, time to admit it: he was overwhelmed. And he didn’t get overwhelmed easily. But having to come to terms with the fact your boyfriend, the first person you were starting to develop feelings for since the disaster with Andrew, was really the son of a bitch who hurt the Gardener and started selling all of the Garden’s deadly science, while simultaneously having to deal with the fact he’d been apparently kidnapped into another dimension was a lot to take in. Then there was the matter of the stab wound through his stomach. Not exactly conductive to helping rational thought. He had to get himself patched up, and then—
“Mr. Midnighter?” came a voice from behind him. It sounded concerned. “What the hell happened to you?”
Midnighter turned and faced the woman talking to him. There was definitely familiarity in her face. This woman somehow knew him, and was surprised to see him. While he certainly didn’t trust her, maybe he could get some answers.
And, just for fun, maybe a few bandages.
FINAL NOTES:
One last thing I wanted to hopefully bring into the game, but doesn't exactly fall under his powers.
- Asset tech - Midnighter fights the good fight by gathering "assets" who keep their eyes open and alert him to anything they think should require his attention. He sets up his assets by injecting them with a small implant, which enables them to talk to him via radiotelepathy (not the official term, but it fits so I'm calling it that). He'll still have a bunch of these left within the pockets of his costume. If permitted, he will only inject consenting NPCs of non-plot related importance, and any consenting player characters or plot-related NPCs will only be done with player/mod permission.
