It's been ages since I've punched some simulations.

What are your thoughts on punching Batman?

[he doesn't hate batman, or anything. but if m wants to, then he'll go with it.]

I can whip that up pretty easy. Big bastard fursuiting his face into your fist. [he claps.] It'll be a treat! Right-- let's get a cab...

You know, I was worried it would be rude to ask. Just don't have it come out inside the base, you might get shot? Or I'll get shot. Let's just avoid it altogether.

[he grumbles as he steps through the door, then looks back to m.]

It's not that far inside. Stick by me-- people are allowed in but it's easy to get lost.

[He juuust manages to make that not sound sarcastic.]

[archie waves at a passing helix employee, leading m to a small alcove. he hands a paperclip board with some paper on it and a pen. it's a small visitor form.]

Fill this out, please. Do you wanna punch three Batmen at once?

I never knew you to be such a quitter, Archie.

[M fills the form out with copious amount of fake information, up to and including his name as "Jack Hawksmoor".]

I can never punch enough Batmen.

[he looks over at the paper while m fills it out, frowning.]

Jack Hawksmoor? That's a made up name. That's a stupid made up name only an idiot would have.

[huff.]

I mean, I could make it so they just run directly into your fist? Or line up and do the can-can while you knock 'em out. Seriously, this stuff could be used for some real sick shit. But we're only getting slightly weird with it today, alright?

If I ever get back, I'm going to tell Jackie you said that. [A smirk.] Because he's very real.

[And apparently exists in multiple universes!]

Sounds like a loser I could definitely take, [he says with a snort, taking the finished form and tossing it onto the counter. he leans over and plucks a little plastic "GUEST" clip and tosses it to m.

starts off again.] Sorry, grandson. Maybe a little down the line you can get weird with it.

If you want to have a chance, fight him in a field in the middle of nowhere.

[M catches the clip and dutifully attaches it to his shirt.]

Unless you really want to fight a grown man who hates shoes and the city he's talking to.

[helix is a big place for sure-- archie leads m to a huge pair of double doors. very x-men like.]

I'll fight him anywhere, anytime. [he pulls one of the doors open.] Right, in you go. We can talk via our comms, I'll set it up then join you in there, yeah?

Be sure to stay clear of Atlantis, then.

[M can only imagine how Jack could manipulate that old city.]

Sounds like a plan.

[And with a little wave, in he goes. He looks around the barren walls, and for a moment he feels as if he's back on the carrier--back with Stormwatch. It's hard to believe how addicted he was to it all; the community, the idea of using his powers to actually make a difference. Even with all the shit they went through....

He was a completely different person then.]

I don't know what that is, but I'll fight him there out of spite.

[archie gives m one last wave as he saunters off to the control room. the barren walls don't last long-- when he boots it up he loads in one of his own favourite sims, a basic field. nothing special-- it's a sunny afternoon and there's nothing around save for the light, refreshing breeze.

then batman - at least the best approximation of him thrown together quickly from old pictures, might be some poor quality textures in places - drops from the sky and runs towards m. archie's given him the "angry orc" ai.]

Nonna you really need to pick up a book.

[Because he knows damn well while it's not real here, it's a very popular myth.

As the simulation starts up, it doesn't take long for M to feel the twinge of nostalgia, slipping into the familiar rhythms of the fight chamber back on the Eye of the Storm. He attempts to block those thoughts out and focus on the new simulation in front of him, but the thoughts are hard for him to escape from.

Back then he felt he was the barely contained psychopath, whose love of murder was only quelled by his sense of duty to a team of adults he once thought had the answers and would offer him a purpose, but very quickly learned that couldn't be farther from the truth. Ironically, of the group, it was probably Jack who was the only one out of the lot of them to actually have his shit together.

M slams his palm into the holo-Bats chin, the weight of his trench coat temporarily catching him off guard. Right, he wasn't that person anymore.]

I read plenty, my sweet grandson.

[he cuts the comm at that, grabbing the remote and making his way down to the sim. he watches m for a moment, unaware of what's going on side the man's head, then saunters over. he's keeping his distance-- though not out of fear. simply just to not get in the way.]

Does this work out?

[M doesn't hear Archie at first, consumed by a new thought as he clearly took his anger out on the hologram in front of him. How could he not have realized how full of self-loathing he'd been back then? He'd always convinced himself that the Midnighter side of him was the side he was always comfortable being, that who he'd been made to be was just a fact of life. The fact that he spent so many hours in that fight chamber, so much so that the other members of Stormwatch routinely mentioned it to him, all the while ruminating for hours on end about own his mental health and whether or not the team that was slowly consuming him even gave a damn, says otherwise.

And then it hits him, why they would always ask him about his time in the fight chamber--they were trying to figure out if he was okay.

With the force that would tear off an actual man's head, M kicks the holo-Bat in the temple, taking little pleasure in watching it fly across the space. It isn't until he turns to get a better view of his prey does he finally notice Archie standing nearby.

Shaking his head slightly, he turns to his friend. He attempts to keep his tone light, like he hasn't just slipped down a mental rabbit hole he wasn't quite ready to confront just yet.]

What, no me for you to punch?

[h2no]

[he's watching m with interest-- there's nothing in his expression that suggests he's upset by what he's seeing, not even with the savage kick that disables the hologram. archie doesn't know what's going through m's head, but he has to wonder if he's enabling instead of helping. they've spoken about m's past as being a fighting machine lightly enough.

archie just shakes his head with a laugh.] Nah. I don't really use this for combat training-- just when we do team exercises. 'Sides, why on Earth would I want to punch my sweet darling grandson?

Well that hardly seems fair, me doing all the work.

[In truth, M's grateful for the distraction, all the while keeping an eye on the Bathologram out of the corner of his eye.]

Or did you just want to see if I'd been lying to you all those years about creatively rearranging people's organs?

I'm just lettin' you have first hit! I'm still mad about Batman callin' me a hobo.

[it's on the ground, then fizzles out. archie tosses m the remote.]

Use it to summon up as many as you want, if you wanna punch more. [he shrugs.] I don't think you lie. I just thought-- I don't know. I'm startin' to feel like assumin' punching would help anything is kind of a terrible misread of your character.

[M catches the remote, but doesn't hit it just yet, instead curious at what Archie just said.]

I dunno, I've always found punching things to be a good use of my time.

What makes you think otherwise?

Well, for starters, you are a real ass person and not a comic book character. I am going to assume you have more to yourself than just punchin'.

[he crosses his arms.]

Tell me, sweet grandson, how are you doing?

[Hey! That's an insult to his medium, mister!]

I already told you, I'm fine.
